Kalushi: The Solomon Mahlangu story, the inspiration behind the Firestars music video by Capso featuring Wyclef Jean

10 March 2017

The Mandla Dube written and directed feature film Kalushi: The Solomon Mahlangu Story, which releases on March 10 at cinemas nationally, has been the inspiration for the video Firestars by DRC-born, South African raised artist CAPSO.

Firestars features Wyclef Jean and is a rousing track that encourages everyone to be their own Firestar and believe in their own inner strength. CAPSO and Wyclef Jean met in New York and a bond was immediately formed. They recorded the track at the once legendary Daddy’s House studio in Manhattan.

“From a hut I was born with music and this music has taken me and CAPSO all around the world,” said Wyclef Jean. “Never give up on what you truly believe in. You are a Firestar.”

CAPSO and Wyclef have a lot in common - CAPSO, living in a country that wasn’t his birthplace has experienced xenophobia and Wyclef who grew up in a foreign country can relate to all those who have had to leave their homeland and become refugees. In a natural and organic progression, the visuals for Firestars were inspired by the film Kalushi. The music video incorporates exclusive footage from their recording session and from the high-end film.

Mandla Dube invited CAPSO to a private screening of the movie with the cast. CAPSO instantly fell in love with the film and its message and this led to a collaboration between the film and the music video. Written in a prophetic manner, Firestars is a song of hope dedicated to Kalushi and all those around the world who relate to Solomon Mahlangu and share in his story and struggle.

‘’This song Firestars reminds us of who we are in this discourse of current attacks on each other as blacks. The revolution that Kalushi fought for seems to be in vain as we are still occupied with contradictions of superiority and inferiority complexes that currently govern own socio economics structure as a society ‘’ says CAPSO.
