“Dorothy & The Wizard of Oz” and “Wacky Races” Headed for Boomerang Africa

24 March 2017

Latest original content from Warner Bros. Animation – Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz and all-new Wacky Races – will premiere in Africa on Boomerang from October 2017.

[Johannesburg, SA]: Turner International has revealed that two highly-anticipated originals, Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz and Wacky Races, both from the acclaimed Warner Bros. Animation studios, will soon be coming to Africa. These shows will join the line-up of classic and contemporary animation on the company’s second fun flagship international kids channel, Boomerang, from October 2017.

Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz is an inspirational magical fantasy based on the classic series of books by L. Frank Baum, which sees Dorothy and her friends embark on a journey to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. Following the original story, Queen Ozma appoints Dorothy as the Princess of Emerald City, a role she was destined for. Dorothy embraces her position and tackles her royal duties with enthusiasm, bravery and feistiness.

But Dorothy soon realises that all is not as it seems. She encounters a chaotic and crazy Oz, one that she is not accustomed to. There are witches, wizards, munchkins, flying monkeys and a whole menagerie of mystical creatures running amok. To add more madness to the chaos, magic falls into the wrong hands and that’s where Dorothy decides to step in!

The Princess of Emerald City takes charge and embarks on a journey to put things right and to win back her Oz. Dorothy tracks down anyone or anything that causes mischief and could potentially threaten or warm her beloved Oz, and puts a stop to it. She soon finds out, however, that she’s not in Kansas anymore. When mistakes happen in Kansas it’s usually not a big deal, but make a mistake in Oz and a Wicked Witch or two will surely come after you.

In Boomerang’s second original offering coming later this year, all racers are being called to the track with Wacky Races. This much loved Hanna-Barbera classic series has received a full-engine overhaul for its Boomerang debut, where we will see the return of everyone’s favourite racers and, of course, their wacky cars!

Viewers will enjoy seeing old favourites such as Penelope Pitstop racing around in her Compact Pussycat car. She is a sassy Southern belle with charm and intelligence that makes her a formidable racer, but most of the time she’s taking a detour to save others. Penelope’s best friend, Peter Perfect, zooms around in the Turbo Terrific. He has a big heart and an even bigger ego, which fuels his super positive “can-do” attitude, while in the Mean Machine, Dick Dastardly and his accomplice, Muttley, continue to stop at nothing to win the race by any means necessary. And don’t forget The Gruesome Twosome — Tiny and Bella — in their “monster” truck, the Doombuggy.

Boomerang’s Wacky Races has received a major a tune-up, filled with fast-paced slapstick comedy, high-octane thrills and pure zany fun from start to finish, where we will see not only familiar faces, but a whole new roster of racers ready to take to the track and race to strange and exotic places around the world.

Patricia Hidalgo, Chief Content Officer, EMEA Kids & International Kids Strategy, Turner commented: “The introduction of these iconic shows and stories is very well timed, as we continue to build Boomerang as our second flagship to Cartoon Network and a strong kids and family brand across Africa. Dorothy and Wacky both perfectly capture the inherent values of Boomerang and we’re confident that new and existing fans of the channel will love this latest offering from our sister-company.”

Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz and Wacky Races join Boomerang’s portfolio of fun and funny, multi-generational shows, which include Warner Bros. Animation’s The Tom and Jerry Show, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, Bunnicula and Looney Tunes, new Boomerang Original production The Happos Family, as well as global and international acquisitions such as Grizzy and the Lemmings and Mr Bean: The Animated Series.
