Uprize! documentary makes its South African debut at Encounters Film Festival

1 June 2017

Uprize issue 264

Following its world premiere at the prestigious FESPACO and recent showing at New York's African Film Festival, Uprize! makes its South African debut by opening up the Johannesburg leg of this year's Encounters Documentary Film Festival.

Uprize! is a documentary film that looks at the world that made the young people that we now celebrate, and what gave them the courage to stand up against the might of a brutal state.

Through the use of rare archive, haunting music, and personal accounts we recreate the incredible feel of a suffocating society on the edge, and the tinder box that ignited it. Featuring the voices of student leaders Sibongile Mkhabela, Seth Mazibuko, Tsietsi Mashinini; and artists such as Sipho Hotstix' Mabuse, Duma Ndlovu, Abigail Kubeka, John Mothopeng, and others.
