Ghanaian entries top the 2017 Golden Movie Awards Africa
1 June 2017
The 2017 Golden Movie Awards Africa will be taking place in Accra on 8 July with Ghanaian entries topping the list.
Director of GMAA, Mimi Andani announced that unlike the Nigerian reign last year, Ghanaian filmmakers are topping this year’s submissions.
The awards have also received more interest this year from all over Africa with countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Serra Leon, Cameroon, South Africa and Kenya creating the list of entries.
“We are glad to announce that by close of submissions last Thursday, the GMAA had received films from different African countries with 44.8 per cent more entries received this year compared to last year,” Andani said.
As part of the award's third year anniversary, the theme chosen for this year is Empowering the African Filmmaker and will include honouring three African filmmakers who have contributed to the film industry through their different roles.
GMAA entries include films of all genres and language or subtitled in any official language. However only films made between 1 January 2016 and 31 January 2017 will be considered for the awards.
The shortlisted films will be screened by a selection committee based on the awards’ criteria for the consideration of the grand jury.
