19 animation projects in development were received from 8 countries which covered the length and breadth of the African continent. The top 9 semi-finalists for the Annecy - MIFA Pitches Animation du Monde at DISCOP Abidjan, in no apparent order, are:
Francis Yushau Brown pitching "Tutu" (Ghana)
Brukty Tigabu pitching "Tibeb Girls" (Ethiopia)
Scolly Cheruto pitching "Machismo" (Kenya)
Ingrid Agbo pitching "L'arbre à Palimpseste" (Togo)

Curtis Gorhe pitching "Association Avenue" (Nigeria)
Ayodele Elegba pitching "Cast Away" (Nigeria)
Comfort Arthur pitching "The Misfits" (Ghana)
Kimson Osaghae pitching "Shade Mighty Maid" (Nigeria)
“The quality of projects submitted was really high and made it extremely difficult for the judges to shortlist. It is immensely encouraging to see the diversity of concepts and beautiful art being created in African animation across multiple countries. Congratulations to everyone that participated!”. Said Nick Wilson, Project Manager of the African Animation Network.
The 9 semi-finalists will pitch their projects to a panel of industry experts at the Sofitel Abidjan Hotel Ivoire on 1 June, 2017 from 11:00am to 12:20pm. 6 projects will then be selected to compete in the Grand Finale at DISCOP Johannesburg (25 - 27 October, 2017) against the 6 projects selected from the semi-final at DISCOP Johannesburg. The top 2 projects from across Africa will then jet off to Annecy in 2018 to compete against other global emerging animation countries in the Animation du Monde MIFA Pitches final.
Geraldine Bache, Head of Projects at Annecy International Animated Film Festival & Market/MIFA, said; “Our goal is already achieved with so many African countries represented! We look forward to seeing them pitch their amazing projects and get the first 6 selected for the Grand Finale”.
Furthermore, Digital Lab Africa (DLA) will reward the best transmedia project overall (after the Grand Finale of the Annecy - MIFA Pitches Animation du Monde at DISCOP Johannesburg and regardless of the winning transmedia project placing in the top 2) automatic entry into the DLA#2 pitch competition final at DISCOP Abidjan 2018.
Those projects that did not make the shortlist for DISCOP Abidjan, including any other African animation projects in development, are invited to submit their projects for the DISCOP Johannesburg semi-final starting from 2 June, 2017.
