Showmax partners with ZIFF: Presents Golden Dhow Award

The Zanzibar International Film Festival is excited to announce a partnership with Showmax to support the best in African filmmaking. For the 2017 edition of ZIFF, Showmax will be sponsoring the coveted ZIFF Golden Dhow for Best Feature Film with a cash prize of USD3,000.

This is the first time the winner of the ZIFF Golden Dhow Award will receive a cash prize and ZIFF thanks Showmax for its commitment to supporting excellence in African film. The award will be announced on the closing night of the festival, July 15th at the official Awards Ceremony taking place at the Old Fort in Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Showmax is an internet TV service that aims to make internet TV accessible and relevant in Africa. As the head of Showmax’s African business, Chris Savides, explains, “For us to make Showmax relevant in Africa, we’ve tailored our apps to manage mobile data constraints, we build local partnerships, and we use local knowledge to deliver TV shows and movies that are right for each country.

“The success of our business depends on truly understanding local needs. You can’t remote manage that from another continent, which is why we’ve got people on the ground in East Africa and why we’re sponsoring the Golden Dhow award. It’s a great way for us to get closer to the industry and support African film.”

ZIFF is committed to creating partnerships that support and promote African film. The support of Showmax enables ZIFF to truly reward filmmakers and support their future development.

Festival Director Fabrizio Colombo explains further, “We are committed to putting film at the centre of ZIFF. This year we received over 600 entries for the festival and the quality and caliber of the films received is amazing. The juries will have a difficult task in selecting this year’s winners, especially for the winner of ZIFF’s most prestigious award, the Golden Dhow.”

ZIFF will take place from July 8th -16th across the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. For all the screening schedules and more information, www.ziff.or.tz , on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZanzibarInternationalFilmFestival, and follow us on twitter: @ZIFF_Zanzibar

Entries to the 2018 PPC Imaginarium Awards now open

Immaginarium 266

The Call for Entry for the fourth edition of the PPC Imaginarium Awards has officially opened and the competition is inviting entries for its 2018 round. The 2017 awards received an unprecedented total of 869 entries, from which 55 finalists were selected. On the back of this success, the PPC Imaginarium is encouraging emerging creatives to enter the country’s richest art and design competition, which offers R500 000 in prizes.

The winner of each of the six categories will receive a cash prize of R50 000, with runners-up walking away with R15 000 each. The overall winner will receive the grand prize of R100 000 – that’s in addition to having won their respective category prize.

The PPC Imaginarium Awards were established by PPC Ltd as a means to give emerging designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and creative thinking by using Portland cement-based concrete as a primary base or material across the competition’s six disciplines, namely, Architecture, Fashion, Film, Industrial design, Jewellery and Sculpture. The competition is the most supportive of its kind in the country and has seen many of its past entrants and finalists go on to become recognised in the art and business community.

The awards are open to South African citizens, resident holders as well as foreign students with study permits, who are not professionally established in their respective fields. Artists and designers may enter multiple categories, with an original artwork for each category, and may enter over again if they entered in previous years. Entry registrations must be submitted online via the official website.

Entries for the Sculpture, Industrial Design, Fashion and Jewellery categories close on Friday, 1 December 2017. Architecture entries close on Friday, 22 December 2017, and Film entries close on Friday, 30 June 2017. National judging and the 2018 winners announcement will take place in April 2018. The winner and runner-up in the Architecture category will be announced in May 2018.

For information on each category and to find out more about the competition, visit the official website  and click on the ‘categories’ tab.
