New streaming service with SABC launched in South Africa

SABC announced that it has signed a license agreement with the streaming service Viu.

Viu is a new streaming service to be launched in South Africa on February 28, 2019, offering local content through its online platform .

Certain content is freely available on the platform with ads displayed while users must log in and subscribe to premium content, as per page of the website .

Premium membership can be renewed on a monthly, weekly or daily basis, depending on the plan selected by the client.

There is currently no way to register for premium membership on the South African side of the site. However, the terms and conditions include the following rates under the billing conditions:

   Daily ̵

   1; R5

   Weekly – R20

   Monthly – R69

Premium subscription user becomes one have access to premium videos and are not presented with advertisements when viewing content.

The license agreement between the SABC and Viu grants the platform rights to selected SABC titles and library content for a period of 24 months, including popular shows such as Uzalo and Skeem Saam.

These shows were previously available for free on YouTube, but are now being migrated to the Viu platform.

Uzalo and Skeem Saam will continue to be available for viewing on YouTube until Viu is officially launched in South Africa.

These shows are already available on the Viu platform and are referred to as "Viu Exclusives".

The streaming service has also secured video-on-demand rights for 18 South African titles from the SABC catalog.

"The SABC is proud to have partnered with Viu SA for this exciting new initiative," said Madoda Mxakwe, CEO of SABC.

In addition to SABC content, Viu is also offering Bollywood films, African series and films as well as South Asian shows to South Africans.

The Viu streaming platform will be available on Android, iOS and via web browsers .
