Canal + Set To Launch Its Pay-TV Platform In Ethiopia
26 March 2019
Canal + has announced that it will soon be deploying its pay-TV offer in Ethiopia over the next few weeks. The company has received approval from the country’s government to go ahead with the distribution of the channels of the Vivendi-owned company in Ethiopia.
The contract was signed during the recent visit of the French President Emmanuel Macron to Ethiopia.
Prior to this new deal, it should be noted that Ethiopia’s audiovisual sector had made it significantly difficult for private operators to enter and do business in the country’s market until a recent ground-breaking policy change.
Nevertheless, in Ethiopia, Canal + is set to face stiff competition from the already existing and leading pay-TV operators StarTimes and MultiChoice.
With this latest agreement, Canal +’s African subscriber base, which was estimated at approximately 4.1 million at the end of last year, stands to increase in size rapidly.
This, provided that the pay-TV operator manages to successfully adapt its content to a well-controlled market by a seasoned competitor such as MultiChoice.
Until the arrival of StarTimes in June 2018, MultiChoice had held a monopoly position in the Ethiopian pay-TV market.
