South Africa’s newest news channel Newzroom Afrika is scheduled to launch on Thursday 2 May with a news team that includes the former eNCA stars Thulasizwe Simelane, Cathy Mohlahlana, and Karyn Maughan who have jumped ship from their previous news station to join the new channel.

The production houses Rapid Innovation and Eclipse TV are behind the Newzroom Afrika channel that will now directly compete against rivals such as SABC News (DStv 404) and eNCA (DStv 403) in a highly-competitive TV space for viewership and advertising revenue. Currently, eNCA dominates with 50% of the combined TV news channels’ audience on DStv.

Last week when asking MultiChoice in a media enquiry whether Newzroom Afrika will be launching on 2 May, Benedict Maaga, MultiChoice spokesperson, said MultiChoice couldn't confirm any dates.

Newzroom Afrika announced on Monday evening that it would be going live on Thursday late-afternoon.

The news platform will broadcast on channel 405 on MultiChoice's DStv pay-TV service. Channel 405 was left vacant after it axed the controversial ANN7 channel that was bought out by Mzwanele Manyi and then rebranded as Afro Worldview until it was shut down last year in August.

Although the programming line-up, on-air talent and content of Newzroom Afrika isn't yet known, other media talent who will be joining Newzroom Afrika include some experienced South African radio and TV faces and voices and including a few Power FM name-brands.

Newzroom Afrika confirmed that the popular TV and radio news personalities Liezle Wilson, Sizwe Dhlomo, Thami Ngubeni, Gugulethu Mhlungu, Thabo Mdluli, Natasha Thorp, JJ Tabane, Marc Lewis, Aubrey Masango, Bongiwe Zwane, Jacob Moshokoa and the former Editor of Afro Worldview Mpho Sithole are now part of the TV news channel.

Newzroom Afrika's flagship news program will be Newz@Prime, anchored by Cathy Mohlahlana with Marc Lewis as the sports editor.

Media industry insiders say they hope that Newzroom Afrika will be able to avoid making the same mistakes as ANN7 did on its disastrous on-air launch that went viral and immediately damaged the channel's credibility.

Newzroom Afrika will be available on all DStv subscription plans from DStv Premium to DStv Access.
