Join Broadcast And Media Leaders At Upcoming Forum To Explore Digital Infrastructure And Platforms For Converged Broadcast Media
Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) in collaboration with the Southern Africa Broadcasters Association (SABA) will be hosting the International Forum on Digital Infrastructure and Platforms for Converged Broadcast Media at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sandton - Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday 21st – Thursday 22nd August 2019.
The forum will bring together stakeholders from SENTECH, SES, SABC, The Department of Communications (South Africa) and The National Community Radio Forum amongst many other high-level broadcast and media executives to acquire crucial information and knowledge on how to successfully build and manage viable digital broadcast media services.
It is the platform where broadcast, telecoms, internet-based and relevant organisations will receive a validated blueprint for the successful implementation and management of digital television and electronic media services in a converged ecosystem.
According to the Publisher of Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) Mr Benjamin Pius, “As the digitisation of TV broadcasting and media services becomes a vivid reality, it has now vital for industry stakeholders to understand how the new digital media infrastructure will work and how it will affect business operations, but also how they can, on the back of this, deploy successful innovative services.”

Animation du Monde 2020 returns to DISCOP Abidjan
ANIMATION DU MONDE 2020 @ DISCOP ABIDJAN
Animation du Monde 2020 returns to DISCOP Abidjan in partnership with the African Animation Network (AAN) will host the 3rd annual Animation du Monde pitching competition next month.
As Africa’s animation industry continues to develop, and in recognition of the challenges that creators face in being able to reach a market, there will be a strong focus on animated short film and series.
DISCOP Abidjan is the second of 5 preliminary rounds of the Pan-African Animation du Monde 2020. Through the DISCOMICS footprint– an initiative run by DISCOP Markets and AAN– and which includes partnerships with 3 of Africa’s longest running comic conventions, AAN will be hosting 4 regional prelims in Johannesburg (at ICON CGC), Abidjan (DISCOP Abidjan), Lagos (at Lagos Comic Con), and Nairobi (Nairobi Comic Con). Because the partners are always looking to create new opportunities for creators across Africa, AAN has partnered with the Accra Animation Film Festival (AAFFia) to add a 5th regional preliminary round.

Animation du Monde’s mission is to give animation projects in developing animation industries from across the world the opportunity to participate at the highest level internationally during the MIFA Pitches. Video pitches will be accepted for those not able to attend the preliminary regional round at DISCOP Abidjan however, candidates who are able to attend the event will be given preference. The competition regulations can be viewed HERE.
“The value of entering a pitch competition like Animation du Monde goes far beyond winning or losing. Through it you build relationships, your confidence to sell your project, and most of all the insight of industry professionals with years of experience with projects from around the world.” says Nick Wilson, Head of Projects & Content at AAN.
During the 2018 Animation du Monde finals in Annecy Ingrid Agbo, from Togo, secured a pre-sale for her project L’arbre à Palimpseste which is currently in pre-production. Ingrid qualified with her project through the 2017 regionals run by AAN at DISCOP Abidjan and won one of two places to represent Africa at Annecy/MIFA 2018 via the Animation du Monde 2017 Continental Finals at DISCOP Johannesburg Through her journey she was able to connect with other African animation filmmakers who were able to help her refine her project through to the 2018 finals in France.
Ingrid shared her Annecy experience with us, “My Annecy experience was so unexpected. Winning the opportunity to pitch my project there was a huge pleasure but also a real challenge for me. This festival was like a gauge for my project. There were so many and different, great projects coming from all around the world.”
Reed Exhibitions Africa and ReedPOP announced that the second edition of Comic Con Africa will take place from 21 – 24 September 2019, at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.
Due to the unprecedented success of the inaugural Comic Con Africa, the event will now take place over four days, including the Heritage Day Public Holiday on the 24th. This is to accommodate even more pop culture fans that will be wanting to attend after the success of this year’s event.
Comic Con Africa is coming to Cape Town
Following the wild success of Comic Con Africa in Johannesburg last year and the anticipated continued success this year, the companies responsible for the popular pop culture and gaming event, announced that the Mother City will get its very own Comic Con in 2020. Comic Con Cape Town will take place from May 1-3 2020 and will have its own tailored lineup of talent geared towards the fanbase of the city, playing towards its unique strengths and personality.
“With the unprecedented success of the 2018 Comic Con Africa it is the natural next step to bring this format to the city of Cape Town. While the style of this Comic Con will be slightly different to Comic Con Africa, we still expect the same level of entertainment focusing on our key pillars which include film, series, animation, cosplay, comic books and gaming. We are thrilled to be announcing the dates when we will be bringing the Comic Con magic to another South African city,” says managing director Carol Weaving.
With Cape Town being the film capital of South Africa, Comic Con Cape Town will have a stronger focus on films and series than the Comic Con in Johannesburg. With this in mind, Comic Con Cape Town has partnered with the Cape Town International Animation Festival, the only dedicated animation festival in Africa which hosts local and international delegates, appealing to those that are creatives, producers and technical artists.
Comic Con Africa will be held separately from Comic Con Cape Town from September 21-24 2019 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Comic Con Africa is a multi-genre entertainment and comic convention that features comic books, games, arts, movies, pop culture elements, and so much more.
