A Lagos-based Information Technology (IT) training firm, HiiT Limited, has expressed its readiness to build and enhance lecturers' proficiency in E-learning, as part of its contribution towards improving the quality of education in the country. In conjunction with Atlantic Computing, USA and the Nigeria Computer Society, the company has organised a two-day workshop, titled, 'Designing Quality Online Courses for E-Learning Delivery', for lecturers in tertiary institutions; Council members and management staff of professional bodies; HR managers/consultants; e-learning administrators, among other training outfits. The Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Shobajo, who made this known in a chat with newsmen in Lagos, said the move was the company's response to President Goodluck Jonathan's call for ICT-driven education in the country during the recent national summit on education. He quoted the President to have said, "the teaching profession globally is moving from the chalkboard to the internet, from paper to paperless instruction, from human to electronic or virtual teacher. In all, the concept of teacher and teaching are being transformed." Shobajo said the workshop was designed to provide participants with practical tools for planning and designing high-quality online courses using Moodle as Course Management System (CMS). "The workshop is unique because it is also aimed at laying the foundation for the Nigeria's e-Learning Practitioners' Group. To this end, it will include online resources to support the participants before and after the workshop." On completion, he said participants would be able to design their own e-learning courses; have a good understanding of the current standards for designing effective online courses and be able to define quality standards that are crucial to successful course design and implementation in e-learning, in accordance with international standards. The workshop would hold in Lagos and Rivers States, as well as in Abuja, and would be facilitated by Prof. M. Diack, an e-Learning Consultant and Professor of Science/Mathematics Education at Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. It would hold at the Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja on November 29-30 and December 13-14, 2010, the Lagos workshop will hold at Best Western Hotel, Ikeja on December 2-3 and 9-10, 2010, while that of Port Harcourt would take place at Hotel Presidential on December 6-7 and 16-17, 2010.
