Egotel to Be Launched Next Month in Tanzania
A new mobile phone service provider, Egotel, expects to launch its services next month, some two years after obtaining operating licence. Egotel is a brand name of Epocha & Golden Ocean, which said it delayed the start of its services because of the global financial crisis that adversely affected the firm's investment programmes.
Egotel's Resident Director and Founder, Abdallah Mnende, told the 'Daily News' over the weekend that the crisis was now almost over, enabling them to continue with their plans."The current economic situation permits us to go ahead. We are looking at the entire business plan, but now we are ready to roll,"Mnende said.
The firm paid USD 2.0 million (2.8bn/) for operating licence as required by the regulator - Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). He added "in the next three weeks we will be in a better position to go on air after securing USD 200 million (280bn/-), enough to launch services in two regions."
The cost of networking Dar es Salaam alone, Mnende said, is between USD 80 million and USD 100 million (112bn- and 140bn/-): "Quick calculations shows that one need at least 1.5tril/- to proper network the entire country."
Egotel is a brand name of Epocha & Golden Ocean and got its national network services in November 2008. The firm partnered with a Singaporean company. Though mobile voice services are no longer the main cash-cow, Egotel said it will start with GSM services to consolidate its customers' base and the launch generation 3 services.
