Telecoms News - In Brief

- Uganda’s telecoms watchdog, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has launched a SIM registration programme intended to reduce phone-based crime. Wireless subscribers have until 1 March 2013 to register their SIM cards with their operators. After that date, unregistered SIMs will be deactivated. The government made assurances that customers’ personal information provided during the registration process would be safe, hoping to assuage concerns that the gathered data might be misused.

- The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has postponed the licensing of spectrum suitable for Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile services, after the country’s main players successfully argued that its draft spectrum assignment plan was released prematurely.
