The founder is Ebou Njie, an IT specialist cum Disc Jockey residing in Texas, USA, Wegambians, would serve as an alternative for both Gambians at home and abroad to network and socialise.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Observer, the inventor, Njie, explained that the site is still in a development phase, and disclosed that currently, they have about 1000 subscribers. "Wegambians is more like a niche social networking sites. It aims to bring together Gambians in different parts of the world and from all walks of life. Companies can advertise on the site, which also provides opportunities for organisations, youth groups and charities to reach out to their members and attract potential members. There is a business directory where members can add local and international businesses," he added.

Joining this new site, according to Njie, is free and explained that all that is required is a username and password. "It has similar functions like Facebook; you can add pictures, share what is on your mind and search for friends or old school mates," he explained, while encouraging all Gambians to create a 'Wegambians' profile.
