Telecoms – In Brief

Telecoms

- Chinese vendor ZTE has launched legal proceedings against Uganda Telecommunications Ltd (UTL) over alleged unpaid fees totalling USD6.74 million relating to the design, planning, integration, operation and maintenance of the telco’s backbone network dating back to 2007.

- The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that the total number of subscribers in Ghana reached 26.33 million at the end of February 2013, a growth of 1.1% over the previous month.

- Telkom Mobile (8ta) has been allocated the 061 number range for use from this week, complementing its existing 081 number range. Going forward, 8ta customers will be assigned a number in one of the following ranges: 081 100 0000 to 081 799 9999 or 061 400 0000 to 061 499 9999.

- Democratic Republic of Congo’s long-awaited connection to the West African Cable System (WACS), which officially launched on 11 May 2012, failed to materialise by the 22 April deadline, adding more confusion to the already farcical process. Telecoms minister Tryphon Kin-Kiey Mulumba placed the blame for the most recent failure at the feet of South African officials, asking for the DRC’s telecoms players ‘not to overreact’.
