Senegal mobile users grow 22.64% to 11.47 mln in 2012


Senegal had 11.47 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of 2012, 22.64 percent more than the 9.33 million recorded a year earlier, according to telecom regulator ARTP. Mobile penetration grew to 94.24 percent from 76.62 percent at the end of 2011. Senegal’s mobile voice traffic increased to 951 million minutes in December 2012 from 589 million minutes in December 2011.

Market leader Orange Senegal increased its user base by 17 percent in a year to reach a total of 7.12 million subscribers. The incumbent operator’s market share fell slightly to 62.06 percent from 65.23 percent. Tigo’s customer base grew by 11 percent to 2.64 million, which nevertheless saw it lose 2.5 points of market share to end the year with 23.02 percent. Expresso nearly doubled its users to 847,810 and had 14.92 percent market share by the end of 2012, up from 9.26 percent a year earlier.

The number of 3G mobile internet users in the country grew by 138 percent to 447,787 at the end of 2012, compared to 188,363 a year earlier. Expresso lost some market share in the 3G segment to its only competitor, Orange Senegal (Sonatel). Expresso had a 68 percent share of 3G users at the end of 2012, compared to 72 percent at the end of 2011.
