ANC turns to Mxit for votes
The ANC in the Western Cape is turning to mobile social media network Mxit in an effort to attract voters in the province, which is controlled by the Democratic Alliance.
The party has launched an application on the social platform, called MyANCWC, to “mobilise voters, educate them, and get them to register and vote”.
ANC Western Cape chairman Marius Fransman says the party will encourage all South Africans to use the app, although the focus is very much on the youth.
The app allows users to learn about the ANC and voting, including whether they are registered and how to register. Users can also tell the ANC what it can do for them and what they will do for it, Fransman says. “The site will be monitored so that issues raised are followed up by the ANC and its elected representatives.
“While nothing can replace door-to-door work, meeting voters face to face, this helps us to modernise the organising ability of the oldest liberation movement on the continent.”
