Senegal: Sonatel attracts 1.25 m Orange Money customers
Senegalese operator Sonatel reported that it had attracted 1.25 million users of the Orange Money electronic fund transfer service since its launch in April 2010. The system widely used for payments and money transfers within the West African country as well as for remittances from abroad, now has 2,000 distributors. The 5.5 million transactions in the first 9 months of 2013 accounted for XOF 27 billion of volume.
Sonatel has also signed up more than 10 commercial partners for bill payment and service purchasing. In the middle of July, Sonatel launched trans-border interoperability, between Senegal, Mali and Cote d'Ivoire. The operator gave these statistics at the Orange Money Forum (2-3 October), its first two-day seminar on the role of e-money in Senegal and Africa.
