Smart launches telecom services in Tanzania
Smart has launched its services in Tanzania, becoming the eighth operator in the country. Smart joins Zantel, Airtel, Vodacom, Tigo, TTCL, Sasatel and Benson in the provision of telecommunications services in Tanzania. The network was officially launched by Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), the infrastructure and industrial development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED). Smart East Africa CEO Abdellatif Bouziani said a promising business environment attracted the institution to invest in Tanzania, the Citizen reported. Bouziani said a market survey had established that the network would operate sustainably. AKFED's investments in East Africa include Serena Hotels, Diamond Trust Bank, Jubilee Insurance Group, the Nation Media Group, the Bujagali infrastructural project as well as the Tsavo power project.
