Senegal’s Telecommunications and Post Regulatory Authority (L’Autorite de Regulation des Telecommunications et des Postes, ARTP) last Friday published its summary market report for the three months ended 30 June 2014, noting that the country was home to more than 14.273 million mobile users at that date – up 2.07% quarter-on-quarter – thanks to strong gains in particular at Orange Senegal and MIC’s Tigo (Senegal). The regulator highlighted that Tigo added a net 150,009 new users for a total of over 3.538 million (a 24.79% share) at that date, compared to market leader Orange Senegal, which boosted its base by a net 96,677 to 7.905 million. However, third-placed Sudatel Telecom (Expresso) fared less well, closing out June with 2.876 million users (20.15%), up just 28,008 from three months before.

In the internet segment, ARTP said that Senegal was home to a total of 3.28 million (fixed and mobile) subscribers at the end of June 2014, of which 98% are mobile internet (2.5G/3G) users, while the fixed line market reached 330,858 lines in service, down 1.7% q-o-q thanks to a 2.4% dip in residential connections. National PTO Sonatel controlled 89% of all lines, or 294,463, at that date.
