Mobile Internet Data Subscribers in Nigeria Reaches 65 Million Monthly
Mobile internet data subscribers in Nigeria have now reached 65 million, according to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission as at June 2014.
The data from January to June 2014, which was analysed by telecoms data research firm, The Telecomist, shows a 13% increase in the average monthly mobile internet subscribers when compared to the previous six month results.
During the first half of the year, a total of 391, 998, 948 active mobile internet subscriptions were recorded which gave an average of 65, 333, 158 monthly active subscribers to internet data on the four GSM operators in the country — MTN, Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat — which were analysed between January 2014 to June 2014.
These results, when compared to that of the last half of the year 2013 (July – December) which recorded 341, 229, 981 active mobile internet subscriptions with an average of 56,871, 663.5 monthly active subscribers, further showed a 13% increase in the average monthly mobile internet subscribers.
The data between January and June 2014 also revealed that MTN (currently the market leader by subscriber base with 44% market share) recorded a total of 202, 669, 313 mobile internet subscribers with an average of 33, 778, 218 MAUs; Globacom recorded a total of 82, 184, 498 mobile internet subscribers with an average of 13, 697, 416 MAUs; Airtel recorded a total of 67, 684, 026 mobile internet subscribers with an average of 11, 280, 671 MAUs; while Etisalat recorded a total of 39, 461, 111 mobile internet subscribers with an average of 6, 576, 851 MAUs.
However, the analysis did not include data from CDMA operators’ internet subscriber base which revealed that Visafone leads with an average of 158, 613 internet subscribers. While Multilinks comes a distant second with an average of 4, 926 MAUs, recently acquired Starcomms recorded 15, 859 subscribers for the first two months of the year.
Overall, the industry has experienced growth in terms of mobile internet subscribers over the past year as further analysis showed that about half the number of active mobile subscribers in Nigeria (currently about 130 million) have access to the internet on a monthly basis.
With this current growth rate, The Telecomist estimates that mobile internet subscribers would reach 75 million by December-end 2014.
