Zohra Derdouri, Algeria’s Minister of Post and ICT, has refuted media reports that the government has refused an offer by French telecoms giant Orange Group to acquire a stake in mobile operator Mobilis, stating that the French telco has yet to make a ‘concrete’ offer.

In an interview with the Algeria Press Service (APS), the official said: ‘Until now we have not received any concrete proposal from the international operator Orange to enter the telephony market in Algeria.’

Mrs Derdouri stated that Orange had previously expressed its wish to enter the national market as part of collaboration with domestic mobile operators. ‘We told them [Orange’s executives] that they should make proposals,’ she added, underlining that ‘the fact of accepting or refusing [an offer] can be decided only on the basis of a proposal.’ In addition, the minister announced that British telecoms group Vodafone has also ‘expressed interest’ in entering the Algerian market.
