Telecom Namibia shuts down CDMA voice and data services

Telecoms

Full-service operator Telecom Namibia discontinued its CDMA mobile voice and data network services in their entirety at the start of this month, in favour of its GSM/W-CDMA/LTE mobile network operated under the TN Mobile brand.

The ‘Switch’ CDMA voice and EV-DO 3G modem-based data services had a low number of users compared to the GSM/UMTS/4G network, which covers the entire footprint of the legacy CDMA system.

As reported by Telecompaper, further reasons for shutting down CDMA are to avoid operating dual mobile networks and to repurpose the wireless spectrum, while Telecom Namibia has sold its CDMA network equipment to another operator.
