Airtel Africa seeks regulation of free call apps
Airtel Africa has called for the regulation of companies offering free call apps, to protect the revenue of mobile phone operators. Airtel Africa CEO Christian de Faria said the over-the-top- service providers such as Facebook, Viber and WhatsApp are profiting from infrastructure deployed by mobile network operators, without paying for the investments. Being unregulated also means the companies are not paying taxes to governments, the Daily Nation reported. De Faria was speaking at the 2015 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Global Symposium for Regulators in Libreville, Gabon.
