Django Girls come to Lagos, to teach women computer programming for free
Django Girls, a non-profit organization that empowers women through free computer programming workshops, has announced it is coming to Lagos, Nigeria to teach young women and girls programming.
A free one-day workshop, aimed at total beginners, will be hosted in Lagos to teach 30 women how to build websites from scratch.
At the workshop, attendees will create their first website, be mentored by programmers who want to help them get into web development, and be well-fed by the organizers (light breakfast and healthy lunch will be provided).
To be a part of the workshop, participants don’t need to break a bank. Aside knowing English, all they need is their own laptop and a smile.
“We believe that the IT industry will greatly benefit from bringing more women into technology. We want to give you an opportunity to learn how to program and become one of us – Women Developers,” the organizers stated in a blogpost.
Interested participants should apply as quickly as possible as there are limited spaces. Applications closes on January 24, 2016. Participants will be notified of the status of their applications on January 30 or sooner.
Participants who can’t afford to come to Lagos but are very motivated to learn and then share their knowledge with others, should not worry much. The organizers are very willing to help. They’re an amazing set of people!
The main workshop will take place on the February 20, with a pre-installation party, where participants will get all the required software ready for the workshop and also meet with their coach and group members, earmarked for February 19 from 4:00pm in Lagos.
The event, organized by Aisha Bello with support from The Nigerian Python Community, is sponsored by GitHub, django, Python Software Foundation, Co-Creation Hub Nigeria, and Godwin Effiong, a Senior IT leader with over 20 years experience.
Django Girls Lagos, as the event is tagged, is part of bigger initiative: Django Girls. It is a non-profit organization and events are organized by volunteers in different parts of the world.
