South Africa: Telkom restores airtime recharge glitch

Johannesburg - Telkom has restored a glitch in its airtime recharge service that affected customers trying to load airtime.

Customers who used Telkom’s mobile transactional services, such as airtime recharges, experienced issues on Wednesday amid a hardware glitch.

Telkom said on Wednesday morning that a hardware failure disrupted its short-code or USSD services for its mobile customers.

The company has begun restoring services.

“Mobile transactional service functionality is now restored, with an exception of prepaid BlackBerry monthly subscription renewals. Slow response may be experienced by customers due to the processing of backlogged transactions,” Telkom said in a statement.

“Telkom apologises to customers for the inconvenience and thanks them for their patience. We will continue to communicate updates with regard to restoration pertaining to BlackBerry renewals.”

Fin24 understands that mobile customers trying to transact at Telkom stores, via online channels or through third parties could also experience problems.

“Telkom is currently unable to provide mobile transactional services to its customers (eg. Airtime recharges) ,” said the company in an earlier statement related to the problem.

“The problem is related to a hardware failure,” the company added.

This is the second major hardware glitch to hit Telkom this year.

In January, faulty hardware also disrupted Telkom email services for several customers.
