Sierratel launches 4G in Sierra Leone

9 February 2018

The incumbent telecommunications operator Sierratel, launched its mobile 4G services last week. The highly anticipated technology in Sierra Leone since 2015 will allow people to experience a new way of communicating. Beyond simple voice and SMS services, consumers will now be able to communicate via video. They will also be able to access new value-added services, driven by very high speed data.

Through this qualitative leap, Edward Sesay, CEO of Sierratel explained that the public company that had become “the sick child of telecommunications” with the liberalization of the sector, will become what he claimed would be “a giant of telecommunications”.

This transformation of the historical operator, its director general attributes it to an immutable will of greatness, maintained over the years. “It’s our mantra to think big, to act big and to grow up. The 4G LTE network is a clear indication of this resolution. We want to assure everyone that our network is running at full capacity and that the rest of Sierra Leone will benefit from our very affordable services. Our network covers Freetown and already most parts of the country,“said Edward Sesay.

By launching 4G on the national telecom market, Sierratel has taken a step ahead of Orange, Smart Mobile, Cellcom and Ambitel. The public company is now in direct competition with the mobile operator Africell, which is also already present in the mobile 4G segment.
