The massive growth of international bandwidth in South Africa

ICASA has released its latest State of the ICT Sector in South Africa report, detailing international bandwidth usage figures for South Africa.

ICASA is responsible for the collection of statistics to monitor and report on the progress of ICT in the country, and used this information for the report.

Responses were received from 84 Electronic Communication Services and Electronic Communication Network Services licensees, which was “a significant increase of 82.61%” compared to the previous reporting period.

The report showed that both outgoing and incoming international Internet bandwidth for South Africa grew from 2016 to 2017.

“Total international Internet bandwidth (Mbps) capacity increased by 61.7% from 2016 to 2017,” said ICASA.

“Bandwidth for international outgoing and incoming Internet increased by 81.2% and 50.9% between 2016 and 2017, respectively.”

ICASA added that the compound annual growth for the three-year period – 2015 to 2017 – for total international Internet bandwidth capacity increased by 10.1%.
