Malawi sets new SIM registration deadline

8 June 2018

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has set a new deadline for the country’s mobile subscribers to register their SIM cards, after the process was postponed earlier this year.

Local newspaper The Times reports that the watchdog has set a new deadline of 30 September 2018, while from 1 July all new SIMs will have to be registered within seven days from the date of purchase. ‘When all subscriber details have been provided, the SIM card will be activated even before the seven days elapse.

But if this has not been satisfied within the seven days, the SIM card will no longer be useful and the customer will need to buy another one and start the process all over again,’ explained MACRA’s Director General, Godfrey Itaye.
