IHS returns InfraCo licence

Mergers, Acquisitions and Financial Results

IHS has returned the regional infrastructure company (InfraCo) licence it was awarded by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January 2015. The Guardian reports that IHS’ decision follows difficulties in securing right of way approval from local state governments to deploy infrastructure in its licensed North Central Zone.

The InfraCo licences allow for the deployment of metropolitan fibre-optic infrastructure and associated transmission equipment on an open access, non-discriminatory and price-regulated basis. The first two were awarded in January 2015 to MainOne Cable (for Lagos State) and IHS (North Central Zone), but the next phase of licensing was delayed numerous times, with a further two permits eventually awarded to Zinox Technologies (South East) and Brinks Integrated Solutions (North West) in February 2018. The remaining two permits have yet to be issued.
