Malawi concludes SIM registration; Airtel warned to disconnect inactive customers

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has warned mobile operator Airtel Malawi that it could face the suspension of its operating licence if it fails to disconnect inactive customers, following the conclusion of the country’s SIM registration campaign.
Nyasa Times reports that Airtel’s competitor Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) registered 75% of its customers by the 30 September deadline and has deactivated any remaining SIMs. TNM added that any disconnected customers wishing to reactivate their mobile number will be able to register their details with the operator, and all airtime and services will be restored.
MACRA’s deputy director for consumer affairs, Thoko Chimbe, said the board will meet to discuss Airtel’s violations and decide on the firm’s punishment, which could include a fine or the suspension of its licence.
