The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has released its second quarter sector statistics for the financial year 2018/2019. The quarter has been marked by many positives, including a notable increase in the number of active mobile subscriptions. According to the Communications Authority, there are over 49.5 million active mobile subscriptions, a 6.2 percent increase from the previous quarter. These figures have pushed Kenya’s mobile penetration up to 106.2 percent. The report states that the quarter saw 2.8 million new mobile subscriptions. Safaricom gained the most new subscribers. In fact, the mobile operator registered its 30th millionth subscriber recently, although its overall subscriptions have since decreased by 0.9 percent causing it to own 63.3 percent of Kenya’s share. Airtel has the second highest mobile share at 23.4% boasting 11,563,967 subscriptions, followed by its soon-to-be partner Telkom Kenya at 9% with 4,447,945 subscribers. Collectively, Telkom and Airtel have half the number of Safaricom’s mobile subscriptions.
