Gulu has been the first rural town in Africa to host an online community conference. The conference convened by, an international humanitarian organisation brings donors face-to-face with the people in various parts of the world they have been funding. The conference was spearheaded by Life In Africa, a charity based in Gulu, which is looking after 250 night commuters in the town.

"This place was chosen to host the conference because of the war that has been going on. We invited people from outside to come and see how they can help to change the lives of those suffering," the charity's head, Christina Jordan told Daily Monitor. "The participants have been interacting online but now this was an opportunity to meet." Over 120 participants attended. Experts in various fields and local leaders from Northern Uganda made presentations.
