* The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Patrick Masambu, has been endorsed by the African Union (AU) as Africa's sole candidate for the position of Director of the Telecommunications Development Bureau of the United Nations.

* Microsoft has announced Mike Cathie's promotion to group marketing director for the Middle East and Africa region. Cathie, who joined Microsoft in 1998 as consumer group director, enjoyed great success in his time with the SA subsidiary, progressing to the position of marketing director, and later to the role of business and marketing officer.

* Jean Yves Kwasi Golley is leaving Celtel Sierra Leone. He will be replaced at the head of the company by Ted Sauti-Phiri.

* Mr Hansen has been appointed as general manager for West, East and Central Africa (WECA), and the Indian Ocean Islands. As GM, Hansen will assume overall responsibility for Microsoft's commercial business as well as its broad-scale citizenship activities including the local language programme, computers-in-education projects and social development grants, among other things.
