SOUTH AFRICAN PREPAID CELLPHONES TO BE REGISTERED
The government's plan to register prepaid cellphone users is likely to close down the countless middlemen who buy SIM cards in bulk and sell them with no questions asked, according to Cell C's chief commercial officer, Jim Courtney.
Under the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-related Information Act, which comes into effect in July, operators are required to register all prepaid subscribers. No person would be able to buy a prepaid starter pack without producing an identity document and proof of residence. Those who fail to comply by a date yet to be announced will have their service cut off.
