Econet Ezi-Cel Lesotho is investing US$2 million to double its network capacity and install new equipment that will enable the company to introduce new upgraded products and value-added services.

Chief Executive Elvis Gwanzura said the expansion will be carried out over the next few months and is the first significant upgrade the company has undertaken in nearly four years. He said the expansion would enable Econet to meet growing demand for its services in the tiny mountain kingdom surrounded completely by South Africa.

"This is our first major expansion of this nature in nearly four years although we have been gradually increasing network coverage by installing base stations across Lesotho." "When completed we will have more than doubled network capacity which will give us additional room to add more subscribers," Mr Gwanzura said. "In addition we would be able to introduce new consumer relevant products and services that we have not been able to launch due to limited capability on the network which this expansion is now going to address."

Econet Ezi-Cel Lesotho was established in May 2002 and is part of the Econet Wireless Group. Econet Wireless International indicated that this year it would move into the Burundi market after successfully penetrating the Malawian and Nigerian markets.
