NIGERIA - COMPUTER SOCIETY OPPOSES MERGER OF NITDA, NCC AND NBC
The Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) has opposed the call for merger of some government agencies including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
At the recently concluded 4th Nigerian Telecom Summit in Abuja, participants had called on the government to merge the three agencies in the face of converging technologies.
But speaking at a reception held in Lagos in honour of top IT personalities in government, the president of the Society, Dr. Chris Nwanena said NITDA should be allowed to be.
According to him, the problem stems from the fact that many people do not understand what role NITDA should be playing. "NITDA is not a licencing agency," he emphasised, pointing out that the idea of merger of NITDA with other government agencies is being proposed by people who are viewing the issue as just one of licencing.
"They wanted one licencing authority, and that is all. That someone should just get to one body and get his licence," he further stated concerning the push for a single regulator for IT, Communications and broadcasting, He pointed out however that NITDA is a development agency whereas both NCC and the NBC are regulatory agencies.
