MALAWIAN ISP SKYBAND WANTS TO PROVIDE MORE WI-FI HOTSPOTS AFTER TRIAL

Internet

Malawian ISP Skyband has implemented a Wi-Fi hotpot at its office in Blantyre and has offered use of it for free to all existing domestic and full internet, dial-up subscribers. It will also launch one in Lilongwe very shortly, writes Russell Southwood.

According to Asif Kassam, Operations Director:"We currently have a very ambitious project and would like to provide several hotspots in and around Blantyre." In a recent letter to customers he said Skyband is looking for partners to host these hotspots.

This development is part of broader plans which include adding additional access points in Blantyre, Limbe and Lilongwe as well as deploying a Wi-MAX network in Blantyre. It has doubled its network and server capacity and increased the number of dial-in lines. Furthermore it is currently testing a broadband service in Lilongwe and once it is satisfied with the results will roll this out in Blantyre.
