BURKINA FASO: PROTEST MOVEMENT GATHERS AFTER ARREST OF YOUNG PHONE CARD SELLERS
Young pre-pay phone card sellers gathered for a demonstration on avenue Kadiogo in Ouga, demanding to know why their colleagues had been arrested by the CRS. Although the demonstration was tiny - around twenty people - it was a sign of the anger caused by this police action. Apparently the CRS arrested 400 pre-pay card sellers.
At the head of the demonstration, Ousmane Nana told a local newspaper:"We have had no news about those who have been arrested. We don't know why they have been arrested. It appears that they have been arrested for stealing cards from a mobile network. But we want the official version".
According to a CRS spokesperson, the aim of the operation was to discourage this type of sales:"These young people have been the object of many complaints." According to the CRS, they had been responsible for stealing by snatching people's pre-pay cards. The CRS say they have held 75 of the youths for questioning.
