- Wataniya Telecom Kuwait reported last week that its Algerian mobile arm has signed up a million GSM users, achieving its end-year target more than four months early. Wataniya Telecom Algeria, launched commercially in August 2004 under the brand name Nedjma, reported 700,000 subscribers in June and has increased its base by 300,000 in less than two months. Its network covers 24 districts, or around half of the country.
- Telecom Namibia has revealed plans to lay off a number of employees as part of a restructuring programme which is due to be completed next month. The telco said it has offered voluntary retrenchment packages, and expects around 150 workers to take this option. According to telecom spokesman Ferdinand Tjombe, the emergence of new technologies in the market has meant that the telco has had to downsize. The restructuring began in May.
