Glenayre Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: GEMS), a global leader in providing next-generation messaging solutions and enhanced services, announced on Tuesday that mobile operator MTN has gone live with Glenayre's Versera Video Mail application as part of their 3G rollout in South Africa. With the launch of Video Mail, MTN joins only a handful of worldwide mobile telecommunications operators to offer this next-generation messaging application.

A large step beyond picture-based messaging, Versera Video Mail ensures all video telephony calls are answered and allows MTN to launch an attractive, high bandwidth service that capitalizes on their 3G technology investment and satisfies demanding subscribers.

Versera Video Mail is an application enabled by Glenayre's Versera Intelligent Communications Environment (Versera ICE). MTN South Africa has implemented Versera ICE(TM) to provide its subscribers not only with video mail capability, but also with advanced messaging capabilities like voice mail, Versera Missed Call Notification and Versera My Services, an Internet portal application that allows subscribers to have full control of their messaging features online.

With Versera Video Mail, users can explore a new level of personalization by recording video greetings as an alternative to voice-only greetings and leaving video mail messages for friends, family and colleagues. Versera Video Mail works just like voice mail, but enhances the user experience by leveraging the advanced capabilities of 3G. Now instead of receiving a voice-only greeting, callers can also see the subscriber asking them to leave their message.

"MTN has always led the telecommunications industry across Africa, and the rollout of their 3G network and the launch of real-time video mail in South Africa are tangible evidence of MTN's commitment to advancing that leadership status," said Bruce Bales, president of Glenayre's Messaging business.

MTN's six African operations ‰ South Africa, Uganda, Cameroon, Nigeria, Swaziland and Rwanda ‰ have seen massive subscriber-base growth over the past year, and increasingly sophisticated usage of the MTN service as a business and personal communications aid. Looking to continue this trend, MTN has performed extensive customer research, which shows that the implementation of video mail - combining visuals, graphics and voice in a true real- time format - will allow MTN wireless customers to express their individuality in a way that's unparalleled in other mobile applications, while increasing loyalty to the MTN brand.

"With Versera Video Mail, users have all the traditional voice mail capabilities they are already familiar with - such as message forwarding, replying and personalized greetings - now available for full- motion video and audio messages," said Ashraff Paruk, general manager, products and innovation, MTN SA. "Using Glenayre's next-generation platform and advanced services like Versera Voice Mail, we plan to continue to offer to our customers the widest range of wireless services possible."

"MTN is dedicated to setting new standards in mobile services, so they realize that wireless video mail and video calling will quickly become a technology that will address the unique needs of the African market," said Bales. "Being at the forefront of offering these applications and services, MTN will be better able to establish customer loyalty while offering an attractive, application that generates additional user revenue."

Bales also points out that by using Versera ICE, telecommunications providers like MTN are able to reduce capital expenditures, improve operating margins and minimize total cost of ownership. As one of the industry's only true next-generation messaging solutions, Versera ICE delivers on the promise of enabling the deployment of multiple applications on a single platform while providing carrier-grade quality for both circuit-switched and IP networks.
