AFRICAN MOBILE CARRIERS LAG BEHIND THE REST OF THE WORLD IN GENERATING INTERNATIONAL WHOLESALE TRAFFIC

Telecoms

African mobile carriers generate only 8% of the world's international wholesale revenues compared to 12% for Latin America and the Caribbean and 28% for Asia, according to TeleGeography 2005. With few mobile operators having international networks of their own, mobile operators have emerged as a key market segment for international wholesale carriers -- particularly as international termination rates remain persistently high.

Mobile subscribers generate 20 percent of international traffic and receive 30 percent of cross-border calls, according to data from TeleGeography 2005.

It is this environment that is bringing increased interest on traffic to mobiles rather than traffic from mobiles.
