UGANDANS SPENT SH1B ON XMAS SMS
Ugandans spent nearly sh1b on sending short messages (SMS) off their mobile phones during the Christmas-New Year season last year. According to figures seen by The New Vision, subscribers to the three telecommunication firms sent 6,465,488 sms from Christmas Eve to December 31 worth sh775,858,560. An sms costs sh120.
Figures for messages sent on January 1 were not available, but industry sources said they could have topped a million across all networks. Many messages are sent in December because many people wish friends, relatives and loved ones a merry season. On Christmas Eve, 1,272,184 messages worth about sh153m were sent, while 1,501,539 sms worth about sh180m were sent on Christmas.
