* Mozambique's former rebel movement Renamo believes that computers are sinister instruments of electoral fraud, and is demanding that the entire tabulation of votes for the forthcoming general elections be done manually.

Raimundo Samuge, the Renamo appointed deputy chairperson of the National Elections Commission (CNE), held a press conference on Tuesday last week , in which he claimed that the use of computers in the count had never been envisaged, and when it was raised the previous week it came as a complete surprise to Renamo. The decision to use computers, he alleged, had been taken by the CNE members appointed by the ruling Frelimo Party on their own.

However there is nothing new about the use of computers in Mozambican elections. Ever since the first multi-party elections in 1994 computers have been used in vote tabulation.
