- The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is working towards the creation of a friendly ICT learning environment in Kenyan educational institutions.The Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Professor George Saitoti yesterday said for the country to reach the goal of universal student ICT literacy levels within the Millennium Development goals period 2,500 schools will have to be equipped by the year 2008.

- Technology billionaire Mark Shuttleworth has launched a new company that aims to put its software onto the computers of companies and private users around the world but its products will be free and the company may never make a cent. Shuttleworth has committed an initial USD10m to fund Canonical for at least two years, and admits he is not sure whether giving away its software will be commercially viable.But with money still in the bank after Shuttleworth sold his previous company, Thawte, for USD575m, he is happy to support Canonical as a philanthropic venture.Canonical has developed an operating system called Ubuntu, based on open source technology where the underlying code is open for anyone to modify or translate into different languages to better suit their needs.
