EMTEL BEATS VODACOM ON 3G IN AFRICA
With the launch of third generation (3G) telephone technology in Mauritius this week, the island nation's Emtel beat South Africa's Vodacom to become the first African country to launch 3G/UMTS, it was announced last Tuesday.
Mauritius' Minister of Telecommunications and IT Deelchand Jeeha became the first person to make a 3G video call on the continent. This month Jeeha was named the African ICT Achievers Awards 2004 overall winner for his acceleration of ICTs and telecommunications liberalisation in Mauritius.
Emtel has 154 000 subscribers. New investment of over USD20-million were required for the new technology.
