Telecoms

Mauritania's regulator (ARM) announced the end of Mauritel SA's monopoly. In April 2001, Maroc Telecom won the international bid for a 54% stake in Mauritel with a bid of USD48.13m. It subsequently sold 20% of its shares to a local Mauritanian investor.

According to the regulator: "From this date forward, the establishment and exploitation of telephone networks and services in Mauritania is fully open to competition subject to the licences and authorisations laid down by law (article 3 of the decree issued 4 November 2000).
