- Key wireless industry companies Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and Sun Microsystems have launched a ŒJava Verified’ programme to provide a unified process for the testing and certification of Java applications for mobile handsets. Says Sean O’Hare, Java Systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA: "Applications can now be tested and certified just once for deployment over a wide range of delivery channels. The programme will help the wireless industry satisfy growing demand for mobile data services by reducing development cost and speeding time-to-market."

- The liberalisation of the telecommunication sector in Cameroon and the coming of the mobile telephone network, has not only created employment for those working in the various companies but has also helped many Cameroonians, to get jobs in telephone maintenance. Besides importing, selling telephones, their accessories and credit cards, telephone maintenance is currently gaining ground among youths in Douala. In prominent residential areas like, Akwa, Bonapriso, Deido, Bonaberi and Congo, maintenance workshops are spread out along the streets. Workshop names include: "telephone-repairs centre", telephone repair wizard" "Dr. tele and decoding". The most frequent problems often faced by most telephone owners are, malfunctioning microphones, antenna, damage of memory and decoding.
