GHANA’S VOLTA RIVER AUTHORITY INSTALLS 600KMS FIBRE

Telecoms

The Volta River Authority has installed a 600 kilometre stretch of fibre optic cable on its high voltage transmission lines. Discussions are going on between Ghana Telecom and the Volta River Authority (VRA) about how the former might use VRA’s backbone which covers many Ghanaian cities to complement its existing infrastructure.

Sceptics in the country will not find themselves getting overly excited by this news as the VRA’s fibre network has been the focus for almost endless discussions for well over three years. There was a period when it was widely discussed that it would become part of a second infrastructure-based company. The VRA has lacked the commercial instincts required to make a success of the fibre network and is believed to have only sold a very low proportion of the total capacity available.
