GLOBACOM CRITICISED BY NCRA FOR PUTTING MASTS NEAR AIRPORT APPROACHES
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority summoned telecom providers including Globacom, MTN, Vodacom, the Nigerian Communications Commission and others to a meeting last week to talk about air safety violations through the erection of communication masts that interfere with airline operations.
Globacom, the youngest entrant in the global system of mobile telecommunication (GSM) has been found wanting over its penchant for erecting communication masts along the approach routes without seeking clearance or abiding with required standards.
Sources at the NCAA said communication masts erected by Globacom in Lagos, Enugu and Zaria are in violation of safety standards because they were erected along approach routes and could interfere with signals being received by aircraft that are preparing to land and could result in an air crash.
The NCAA has given Globacom 24 hours to reduce the height of the masts in these locations. The source said that NCAA has the legal backing to pull down the masts, and bill the service provider for any amount of money it spent in doing so, but prefers to seek a peaceful resolution to all matters.
